Can a Nose Job Be Covered by Insurance?
If you are considering rhinoplasty (a nose job), one of the first things you will need to determine is how you will pay for the procedure. In some cases, medical insurance can cover a portion or all of the cost of septoplasty and/or turbinectomy, two techniques that are often combined with rhinoplasty. Since insurance coverage is a topic that frequently comes up during Dr. Ashkan Ghavami’s rhinoplasty consultations, the renowned Beverly Hills rhinoplasty surgeon decided to discuss the topic in this blog post.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Is Not Covered by Insurance
Most plastic surgery procedures are not covered by medical insurance. However, some procedures can be covered in part or in full by medical insurance if it they are deemed medically necessary. Rhinoplasty performed to resize or reshape the nose is considered to be a cosmetic procedure and thus cannot be covered by medical insurance.
Insurance Can Cover a Portion or All of the Cost of Septoplasty and Turbinectomy
Septoplasty is a nose surgery that is performed to correct a deviated septum. Turbinectomy is another nose surgery that corrects the turbinates to improve impaired breathing. These procedures are typically recommended only after conservative treatments have failed to correct the issue. Candidates for these procedures are individuals who:
- Were born with a deviated septum or excessively narrow nose
- Have longstanding allergies that have caused part of the inner nasal anatomy (the turbinates) to enlarge, partially blocking the airway
- Suffer from nasal trauma from an accident or sports injury
- Have structural or breathing problems due to a complication from a previous rhinoplasty procedure
Some patients undergo rhinoplasty with septoplasty and/or turbinectomy to correct cosmetic and functional problems at the same time. In these cases, insurance will only cover the cost of the septoplasty and/or turbinectomy portion of the procedure. Be sure to get a breakdown of all the different factors of your surgery’s cost to understand which portions will be covered by your insurance.
Financing Options
It’s important to note that Dr. Ghavami’s Beverly Hills practice is not an in-network provider contracted with any medical insurances. But certain PPO plans will cover medically necessary plastic surgery procedures like septoplasty and turbinectomy. The amount of coverage will depend on the details of your specific plan. Patients who need help paying for their procedure can do so through affordable financing. Dr. Ghavami is pleased to offer CareCredit and Alphaeon, two leading healthcare financing companies that allow patients to make monthly affordable payments based on each patient’s budget.
